Thalia Civic League Next meeting June 19, 2023 at New Life Church
The City received a Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant from (FEMA) in 2018.
The scope of work was altered to develop
adaptable/applicable commercial revitalization guidelines and neighborhood
planning recommendations City-wide, while simultaneously exploring
affordable housing opportunities and flood mitigation strategies.
The Lynnhaven River Now organization works with residents and businesses to familiarize them with sustainability practices and proactive protection of the local waterways. They normally educate city residents on these practices through outreach events (such as a Civic League meeting – again, hopeful…) but due to COVID are taking different approaches. Such is this promotion of the Pearl Home Program.
Becoming a Pearl Home costs nothing. Pearl Homes incorporate sustainable practices in the home, yard, and neighborhood. Good daily habits and decisions make the difference. Whether you have installed a rain barrel, made a pledge to “scoop the poop” or switched to a reusable water bottle and reusable grocery bags, you are helping to bring our waterways back to life.
Interested Residents can fill in a brief application (use link) to qualify for a free Pearl Flag & Pole to recognize their efforts to improve the environmental health of our waterways and community! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/pearlhome You will be amazed at how easy it can be!
Some neighborhoods are working on Pearl Home Campaigns & becoming Pearl Neighborhoods.
Venture Realty/Thalia Road Partners has WITHDRAWN their application to rezone the Willis Wayside property. That means that there will be no 5-story apartments built on this site under the current proposal.
The developer has expressed a desire to continue their efforts to develop the site, but this time with the help and input from the Thalia residents. The Thalia Civic League will appoint a "Development Task Force" for the purposes of meeting with the developer and bringing information back to the residents about any future proposals.
However, this project has been defeated by the neighborhood. The world is run by those who show up. You folks showed up. Great job by all those who wrote letters, emailed Council and the Planning Commission, showed up to speak, volunteered and remained committed.
